Hotels St Ives

St Ives united kingdom hotels

When deciding on the right hotels, St Ives has a lot to offer.  It is knowing what to look for as there are more considerations than simply getting a great room or fantastic view.

When deciding on where to go I always work from the general to the specific.

Starting iwth country then area, then specific location (in this Case St Ives) then the finer details like hotel location, eating, getting about and facilities.

St Ives is an amazing place, like much of Cornwall it is fairly hilly.  Also like so many sea side towns and villages it is old and not designed for parking, this means that parking can be limited.  So when deciding where to stay it is a good idea to think about a few things first.  Start with the general and work to the more specific.

Location and access can be tricky for St Ives hotels.  Firstly if you are visiting in the summer book well in advance as it is a very popular pace to visit.  You don’t need to worry about anything here as the hotels are used to dealing with all the unique issues that Cornwall has.  However it pays to know what they are and ask before you go.

Stay in Hotels St Ives for a great holiday

Type of accommodation Points to consider.

Check out your hotels Star Rating and special offers.

If disabled access is important to you it may be worth considering a few things.  The hotel itself and how good the access is.  Remember these hotels can often be in old buildings and although disabled access is required these days they may be exempt for various reasons or the building may just not be able to accommodate it as it is so old so check this out.  Even if the hotels do have disabled access check out the distance to the town and the beaches as St Ives is steep in areas and it can be a hard walk down to town from the outskirts.  My sister and I parked out of town and walked in as my sister has a disability she found it very difficult to navigate the hill – especially on return!

Private car parking or public car parking.  For those further out there are of course the buses these only go so far so a taxi, while costly would be the better option.  Even though you may have a car and a disabled badge, be aware that parking in the town itself may not be as easy as it is very busy, and the roads are tiny.  There are car parks on the edges of town that would be a better option.  Not all hotels will have parking and those that do do not always have parking near them.  Don’t rely on being able to park on the roads as they can be busy or restricted parking especially in July and August.

Hotel amenities vary so it is a good idea to check out they have everything you need.

Sea views are great to have but realistically how long are you going to be in the hotel for?

Check out the bathroom features for instance does your bathrooms feature hair dryers.  Is it a shower or a bath.  Is it en suite or not etc.

What are the dining options in your hotel if any?  There is a huge selection of cafes and restaurants of all kinds in St Ives, everything from quaint old pubs which are atmospheric to chic restaurants.  The old pubs on the harbour front do huge meals and are amazing to visit if you love old buildings.  If it is busy there are more out of the way places in the side streets.  Alternatively opt for good old fashioned fish and chips sitting watching the boats go by and soaking up St Ives amazing light.

Is there wireless internet access in your room if you want it.  Many cafes have this now anyway however check if it is important.

What is the avg price night as this varies considerably from hotel to hotel and season to season.  Save money by going in September, it is often still warm and less crowded.

Does your hotel offer continental or full Cornish breakfast.

Are there televisions in the room or a TV room if you want one.

Swimming pool

Do you have access to irons, ironing boards or an ironing service?

Remember for those coming from outside the UK smoking in the UK in hotels, pubs etc is against the law, please take note of the no smoking notifications additional

When staying in St Ives you will have plenty of opportunity to visit one of the many galleries St Ives has to offer.

The Tate St Ives

St Ives is well known for its art due to it’s unique location and amazing light.  Most of Cornwall has a beautiful light, however because St Ives is flanked by beach and water on both sites the light there is truly amazing.  You have to see it to truly appreciate it.  This and the fact that St Ives has a picturesque harbour and town it what brought the artists here in the first place.

St Ives has a history of art starting with Leach Pottery in the 1920s.  Then in 1928  three men, Wallis, Nicholson and Wood joined together to create what has become the artists colony that we see this day.

Now it is still a popular place to come for both artists and art lovers alike.  You will be spoilt for choice where art is concerned.

There are two well known places to visit.  Both opened in 1933.  Firstly there is the St Ives Tate, which houses modern art.  This is situated behind the town near the surfing beach.  It often has special displays it is worth checking their site for more information and opening times.

Secondly there is the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden which houses her artwork and sculptures, a must for any fan of her art.

Last but not least there are lots of small art shops and studios and artists dotted around the whole of St Ives with every type of art style imaginable.  It is worth taking the time to seek out these artists, to watch them and to admire their artwork.

St Ives also has it’s own art club for amateur artists they often do their own art display through the summer.

So when staying at St Hotels St Ives it is worth considering taking a look at these amazing places and the artworks within.
